THANK YOU SABRINA FOR SPONSORING ME AND GIVING ME A NAME!

One of the shelters MARS works with on a regular basis recently received 54 dogs that were seized from a hoarder home.   MARS has committed to taking 18 of these precious lives in order to give them a second chance.

Walter is a sweet petite boy that craves affection.  He is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly.   Give him a little time and TLC and he will be your best friend!

 Notes from sending shelter:

So far some of them have tested positive for Demodectic mange (non-contagious mange) have started treatment for it and had several baths with special shampoo -- also they are being treated for eye infections.

The sores on their legs and paws are from laying and walking in all the feces and urine that was never cleaned up. The dogs that were locked in crates had it running out of the fronts of them from the doors-- the floors literally had 3 to 4" of feces and urine on it and the stench was unbearable -- the law enforcement had to use gas masks with oxygen attached to go in and retrieve the dogs out to us to crate up for transport.

There were tornup couches and chairs the dogs could jump up on to get out of the stuff on the floor but they to were covered in feces and wet urine from where the dogs would get up there and lay to get out of it.

None of these 54 dogs have ever been outside and never been on a leash-- they were locked in the downstairs basement of a home that was a finished basement and only had little to no human contact except for the single lady that lived there with them.

They has been easy for us to handle a little skittish and scared at first with all the change they have been through the past week, but over all nice little dogs and most are under 20#.

The one and only thing that  she did was feed these dogs and keep water buckets down because none of them are severely underweight.

UPDATE ON LIL' WALTER:

Walter is a cuddle bug!  When he's not having fun exploring outside, he likes to curl up on your lap or roll around in blankets and get all nestled in!    Walter is crate trained.

He attended the adoption event recently and did really well meeting everyone.  He is more on the calm end of the spectrum but doesn't appear to be shy/afraid.

Lil Walter has sure embraced his new life so far!  He LOVES walks and jumps up and down by the door when he sees the leash!   He has a light gait resembling an Italian Greyhound and likes to explore all he can on his outings.  We usually walk him on an extendable leash to encourage his sense of adventure!

He knows how to sit and takes treats gently.  He’s crate trained and in fact, he’ll run into his kennel in the morning to wait for his peanut butter stuffed bone!

He’s the ultimate lap dog and tries to sneak onto your lap no matter where you are.  He’ll even try to jump into your arms while you’re standing up sometimes!

New Year Update:

We are proud to report that Lil Walter has graduated to free roam when we're away from the house!  We occasionally crate him just to keep up on this skill but he enjoys looking out the living room window so much now!

He is working on his car etiquette and is much better than when he first came into rescue but isn't quite ready for that cross country road trip!

He didn't play with toys when we first got him but he's taken a liking to soft toys of all sizes.  He doesn't tear them up either so he's fun to buy for!

The winter temps haven't slowed him down much so far - he still wants walks and heads out to take care of business, sometimes after a bit of coaxing.  He looks stylish in his red coat and will soon be sporting matching red boots on walks.  If we see another dog on a walk, he MAKES SURE to call out to them so they see his nifty duds!

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
