One of the shelters MARS works with on a regular basis recently received 54 dogs that were seized from a hoarder home.   MARS has committed to taking 18 of these precious lives in order to give them a second chance.

Ollie - aka #2 - is so calm and mellow!  He will blossom into a wonderful family dog in no time.

 Notes from sending shelter:

So far some of them have tested positive for Demodectic mange (non-contagious mange) have started treatment for it and had several baths with special shampoo -- also they are being treated for eye infections.

The sores on their legs and paws are from laying and walking in all the feces and urine that was never cleaned up. The dogs that were locked in crates had it running out of the fronts of them from the doors-- the floors literally had 3 to 4" of feces and urine on it and the stench was unbearable -- the law enforcement had to use gas masks with oxygen attached to go in and retrieve the dogs out to us to crate up for transport.

There were tornup couches and chairs the dogs could jump up on to get out of the stuff on the floor but they to were covered in feces and wet urine from where the dogs would get up there and lay to get out of it.

None of these 54 dogs have ever been outside and never been on a leash-- they were locked in the downstairs basement of a home that was a finished basement and only had little to no human contact except for the single lady that lived there with them.

They has been easy for us to handle a little skittish and scared at first with all the change they have been through the past week, but over all nice little dogs and most are under 20#.

The one and only thing that  she did was feed these dogs and keep water buckets down because none of them are severely underweight.

UPDATE ON OLLIE:

Ollie sure is a chill fellow for having come from a hoarding situation.  He has a more dominant personality so he was likely a leader there.  He is crate trained.

He is the mentor for Zimerick (another dog rescued from the hoarding situation in the same foster home). His calm demeanor really makes Zimmy feel safe.

We think he would be fine as an only dog.  He's the type who could be good at traveling or other adventures given his laid back personality and confidence.

He attended the adoption event last month and did well meeting people.  When he wasn't visiting with a potential adopter, he would sit quietly or lie down.

His unique markings make him look like a mini Greater Swiss Mt Dog!

The more time we spend with Ollie, the more we love him!  When we first got him he was friendly but mostly aloof.  You could tell he wasn’t used to depending on humans for much.  Sadly, he learned to go without.  Whoever adopts him will enjoy his laid back style!

He is crate trained, he’s learned to sit, walks nicely on the leash, enjoys people watching, and likes to roll on his back in the grass.

He’s very patient with the other dogs in the house.  He sometimes breaks down and half-heartedly plays with Zimerick (also up for adoption) and on occasion tries to get our old Labrador to play.

He’s not around kids in his foster home but he has done well meeting the neighborhood kids.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
