Meet Barney!

* House-trained!
* Crate-trained!
* Super-loyal!
* An expert car rider!
* Excellent walking buddy!

Barney is a super sweet little chihuahua mix that was left at a shelter and is now looking for a new home.   He would make a great companion for someone looking for a little buddy.

Barney is really sweet and super loyal!  He likes to be near his person so he can get lots of pets and be talked to.   He gives you his undivided attention and appears to be trying to understand your every word!  That, along with his love of treats, makes me have no doubt that he could learn absolutely anything at all!  He knows how to "sit pretty" and is hoping that his foster owners post a video of that soon!

His crate is his safe place and he does not protest when he's put in it, especially if there's a special treat involved.  Sometimes he does bark for a minute afterwards because he’s sad to be left behind but no more than 2 minutes (I timed it).

Barney is a fantastic car dog - really quiet and calm.  He walks well on the leash and enjoys being out and about!  He LOVES his soft, squeaky toys.  He likes to carry them around, take them outside, and usually has to bring several to bed!  He has quite a collection built up and guards them, with great enthusiasm, against the other dogs in the house.  He would do fine with a calm dog who doesn't try to steal his toys or treats, although sometimes he’s convinced that a dog is trying to steal when they’re really not.  This has caused some doggie arguments in the past.  Even though he has never guarded his toys against us, homes with young kids are not recommended for him at this time.

He has come a long way since he first entered the foster system.  He is housetrained and will ask to go out.  He accepts strangers at our house if they dish out treats!  He’s still not a fan of lawn mowers or any sort of long handled item like brooms. He will bark and bite at them if given the chance.  He shies away from smaller stick like objects, possibly due to something from his past.

He’s a bit camera shy at times so he hopes you like his pictures.

He’s really good at wagging his tail and can’t wait to show you in person!

This morning Barney went on his first walk around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis (see his selfie by the band shell).  He enjoyed the trek and trotted happily along!  He's definitely a dog that would do well in these situations - he didn't get too freaked out by the strollers, bikes, people,and even walked without much fuss past several dogs, big and small!  He even walked by a goose family and didn't bark or growl at them - what a respectable citizen!  He got many smiles along the way from other walkers who undoubtedly were impressed by his good manners.  When it came to drinking out of a dish that was sitting out for dogs, Barney said NO WAY!  Community water is not for him-I don't blame him!  If you want a great walking buddy, please consider Barney!

Thank You!

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
