Description:
Collin is a free-spirited young Shepherd/Chow mix, estimated to be around one-year-old. Although he came to us as a stray, it's obvious he'd been comfortable in a home as someone's pet before living on his own. He got a pretty good taste for doing his own thing, though, and loves the freedom of outdoors — playing, running around, or just hanging out and relaxing outside for hours, watching the birds and squirrels. A secure fenced yard is a MUST for this energetic, but mellow nature lover. Collin's independent streak lets him easily entertain himself without the need for people or other pets to stimulate him, yet he remains affectionately responsive, greeting calls by bounding happily to meet friends with a goofy grin and a wagging tail. While he's not usually overly inclined to initiate affection, and never comes off too needy or attention-starved for reassurance, he does on occasion seek a bit of TLC, and he's more than happy to return it.

He is housebroken, conditioned to alert owners that he needs a potty break. He has become accustomed to a few hours a day in a crate when the house is empty, and is even comfortable using it as a bed-down spot when it's not.

He gets along easily with other dogs; happy to run, wrestle, or play tug-a-war. He is also fine with cats, birds, and kids, though it isn't in his temperament to get lonely without other playmates. He does bark at strangers, but can be told to quiet down. And if especially wound up awaiting the approach of someone he's excited to see, he's been known to dance in circles on his hind legs, pawing his front feet in the air. Collin is exceptionally intelligent, and easily trained. He is highly motivated by treats, and learns quickly and efficiently. Walking nicely on a leash is a new adventure for Collin, and he still needs a lot of work in this area.

For the pet-lover in search of a mid-sized friend-of-the-family (45 pounds) who guards the house, does what he's told, likes to play and cuddle when asked, and can keep himself amused in your absence, Collin could be the missing piece you've been looking to fill your hearts with, whether you're sprouting a zoo of pets and family with an active lifestyle, or a quiet one person household with a busy schedule. He's just waiting for your call.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
