Description:
Meet Balto! He is a favorite among shelter staff and they are really hoping you can help save him. Balto is a beautiful White German Shepherd/Husky mix though it's hard to tell that from his photograph. He loves to go for long walks and does pretty good on a leash. He is completely housetrained and never pottys in his kennel. He can be a dominant boy so he needs a foster family that can offer good leadership and obedience. Did you know that as a foster for MARS you can attend obedience class with your foster dog for FREE? What a great way to build a bond, give back and learn basic skills both you and your dog can use time and time again. Please help us save Balto. He is a great boy with so much to give. He seems very happy and content. It is truly amazing the capacity that dogs have to trust and love, even if they have been neglected or mistreated in the past. We had our vet recheck him for heartworm in March and he got a clean bill of health, and he now weighs 88 lbs! Actually, about a month after we adopted Balto we ended up adopting a second dog, Duke; so Balto has a friend to keep him company. We didn't really plan this, but a friend of a friend
of a friend had Duke and couldn't keep him so we ended up adopting
Duke, a 100 lb male originally from the Tennessee Humane Society. As best we can tell he appears to be a mix of a Red-hair, blue-tick Coonhound and a Lab. Balto and Duke get along very well and love to go on long walks with us. Christmas was a lot of fun: Megan came to visit with her two puppies that she had adopted from MARS, and our son came with his border collie mix puppy that he had adopted from the St. Cloud Humane Society earlier in 2010. So we had five dogs, all adopted in 2010, romping around our house for about a week. Needless to say I decided it was not wise to put up my ceramic Dickens Christmas village. I really wanted to take a photo of all of them together, but I could never get them all to sit still at the same time even for an instant. Also, I wanted to mention how well the harness that hooks in front (on the dog's chest area) works for walking both our dogs. This was recommended to us by one of your vets. When we first got Balto he pulled so hard that we were afraid he would damage his larynx, and a walk was not all that pleasant for anyone. The harness was like a miracle, greatly cutting down on his pulling. The difference is truly night and day. I would highly recommend it for any dog that pulls. Our dogs don't mind wearing the harness; in fact they both get very excited as soon as we get out the harnesses because they know that means we're going on a walk, which they both love to do. Thanks for all the great work you and MARS do! *The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person! If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification! Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.
*Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care. Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks. Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.
