Description:
Oscar was poorly socialized with dogs when he arrived. He has made good progress in the 6 days he has been with us. He is learning by example from the resident pack. We (pack) sit quietly and wait for food, snacks, toys, affection, come when called, no means don't do that, leave it means don't even think about it, no bark means quiet, off means no jumping on people or kitchen counters. He has even begun to play with Lacey our 2yr old female. Our adult Shepherds are treating him as they would have their own pups. Oscar was terrified of Buster, the household cat, when he arrived. Buster was confused by a dog who did not want to play with him. Oscar watched Buster play with both Harley and Lacey, and nap with our 14 yr old mixed breed, but backed away when approached by Buster. Buster then did what Buster does best, a sneak attack from the table top, landing on Oscar, the running for the stairs and looking back to see if he is being followed. He was, and Oscar overcame his fear of him. Now they wrestle, play follow the leader, and Oscar initiates play with Buster. I've even caught them napping on the dog sofa together. Oscar is very child oriented. He spent his first day with us watching my 2 1/2 yr old grandson. He followed Cooper everywhere, and even snuck into bed with him at nap time. He is very affectionate, and loves nothing better that to be petted and scratched. He is very smart and eager to please people, and with the help of the pack other dogs as well.
He is getting used to a leash, at first he completely shut down but is now understanding that the leash won't hurt him.
He is a little blank slate, with the potential to be a very loving and protective boy. He is right at the window barking when strangers show up. He crates well for transport, but sounds as if he is being severely damaged if crated in the house. He gets his exercise by running with the pack, chasing balls and squirrels several hours per day. We live on acreage way out in the sticks, and the pack has 2 fenced acres to play in supervised. Obedience training would be a benefit for those who are not living in a rural environment.
Please feel free to fill out an ADOPTION APPLICATION on our main website, www.midwestanimalrescue.org, by clicking on the Form/Applications link under Website Features. Thank You! When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care. Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS. We do not transport to potential adopters. How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet. Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks. Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance. Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
